HER:
The first day of my captivity was like being born… or dying. They’re both kind of the same thing with the long tunnel and the bright light at the end. Maybe it wasn’t like either, actually. Maybe I’m remembering it wrong because for me that day all there was was darkness.
HIM:
Today I found something beautiful and decided to break it. I wanted to see it shatter in my hand and crumble at my feet. Her name is Emily Vargas. She’s bright and educated and stunning. Articulate. She’ll want someone to talk to her.
My Review Of Comfort Food by Kitty Thomas
This was such an odd book, lol.
It wasn’t the usual kidnap/Stockholm Syndrom story.
Yes, it had some BDSM and sex scenes in it, and yes she was held against her will but somehow, it wasn’t all that dark or erotic.
I can’t make up my mind if it was more thought-provoking or just a little slow and uneventful.
EMILY
Well, from the very beginning I had a very clear picture of this woman and how she sounded.
I knew she was intelligent, well educated and logical. Your average 30-something woman.
She wakes up tied to a chair and blindfolded. Her captor enters and unties her but doesn’t speak, At all.
That in itself would terrify me. My mind would play absolute havoc with me more than anything he could think up to do to me.
Over the next few weeks, she goes through the biggest mind fuck ever.
Not only does he not speak to her but he makes it so that everything he does do to her, is something she asks for as she comes undone and breaks with a kind of sensory deprivation.
It is amazing what you can grow to get used to or adapt to.
I had started to crave the gentle caresses that accompanied meals. I knew it was sick, twisted, but I needed to connect, to feel some sort of communication with him.
MASTER
There is not an awful lot I can actually say about him as we see almost nothing from his point of view. He’s an extremely attractive, physically fit man with a lot of wealth.
And for reasons you don’t find out until near the end, he has taken this poor woman to break her down and condition her.
He is a patient, intelligent and determined man, y’all.
It drove me batshit crazy trying to figure out what he wanted, lol. I wouldn’t last 24 hours in the situation Emily was in.
People sociopathic enough to break and condition someone properly don’t have the level of self-control required to do it. Most with the control aren’t big enough sociopaths. This was why I feared this man so much, not because I was his prisoner, but because I saw in him the blending of these qualities, which made the possibilities of what could happen endless.
SEX SCENES
The sex scenes weren’t the main focus of this story.
Yes, there were a few but it was about how he managed to get her into that state of mind, where she was willing to submit to him in such a way and enjoy the pain he wanted to inflict on her when not long ago she had been terrified of the thought.
It was all about the mind fuck.
FINAL THOUGHTS on COMFORT FOOD by Kitty Thomas
This is a really interesting read for those of us that are fascinated by human psychology and what it takes to break and then build up a person.
Yes, it’s a very thought-provoking book.
Still not sure how I feel about it now that it’s over though.
