I looked at the man in front of me, he didn’t look scary or threatening, to anyone else he looked harmless. He had a wide white smile that could make any girl melt, he had shaggy long blonde hair and innocent baby blue eyes. His Australian accent added to his worldly charm. He looked like a sweet and kind surfer but with a jaw gripped tight that showed anger. I looked down at the blade gripped in his palm and the blood dripping from the edges. His face read that of almost sorrow, but only almost. I looked at the floor, my voice lost in a scream.

I looked down at her soft cheeks, her auburn hair and her still green eyes. She wasn’t blinking, she wasn’t breathing. I saw the crimson red spread from her cut throat all over the Italian marble floor. It seeped into the cracks. This girl, this fifteen year old girl with blood staining her favourite floral dress… She couldn’t be my sister, I wouldn’t believe it.

I foolishly thought this would be the worst day of my life.

That was the day I was taken, that was the day I met Draco.

Can be read as a standalone alternatively – part 1 and 2 of 3. Final instalment is out now.

My Review Of Monsters In The Dark by Pepper Winters

I’m afraid this book didn’t quite grab a hold of me, guys.

I liked the idea and the characters were okay…but the writing style just wasn’t my thing (just my personal preference).

I found it almost chaotic at times and I had a hard time understanding what the characters were trying to express and how they felt at different times.

DRACO

This guy and his partner are in Rome looking for a girl to abduct and train in order to sell her into the slave trade.

In the beginning it sounds like Draco hates his partner and everything that he has done, wanting to take him down. Which is fine but then he goes on about wanting to “break” Aimee and even kills Erin – her sister. So I really wasn’t sure what his game was.

He seemed against anything evil on one page but then he was doing just as bad on the next page. I get people having doubts and impulse issues etc. but I got whip-lash from this guy.

Later on, it did explain why he was doing some of what he was doing, but still…

AIMEE

I liked this girl but found her reactions to some of these situations to be off.

I understand Stolkhome syndrome, and some of my fave books (The Dark Duet by C.J. Roberts is AMAZING!) have this in it, but in my head, it would take more than a few days in order for this to develop, and it seemed like after he killed her sister, abducted her, beat her with a hockey stick for several days while trying to get her to eat moldy food with maggots on it, she fell in love somehow. Rather quick, if you ask me.

Now granted, he was the lesser of two evils but still…

Some of the spelling and grammar was a little off too, but I am awful with that stuff and so I really have no room to talk. BUT, this made me giggle so freakin’ hard –

I removed the shirt he had placed on me, and the mirror betrayed me yet again and showed my scared nipple in all its glory, I felt tears in my eyes, but I held them back.

Now, I know it’s meant to be a “scarred” nipple and it’s just a wee mistake that I have made many times but, all I can imagine is a nipple, freakin’ the hell out, trying to scream and run away!

FINAL THOUGHTS on MESSY AND SHATTERED by Mercy Cortez

I did like the idea of the story, I love a good Stockholm syndrome book, but I just couldn’t quite get into the writing style or characters’ personalities. However, it’s one that a lot of others really enjoyed. If you’ve read it, feel free to chat with me about it 🙂
